#803: Master Kong (康师傅) Premium Taste Roasted Beef Noodle

$

Here’s another one of the Master Kong variants sent to me by Bo H.! Thanks again! This one is the the first Master Kong large noodle bowl I’ve tried.

The side panels (click image to enlarge).

Includes a folding fork!

The powder seasoning packet.

This stuff has a very nice beef taste to it.

Liquid seasoning packet.

Thick and oily.

Veggies and bits.

Looks like a lot of veggies and some dried beef perhaps.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a slice of cheese and some kizami shoga (pickled ginger). The noodles aren’t the best in the world but they’re not bad – could have slightly more backbone. The broth is great – very beefy and tasty! The veggies and bits are wonderful – excellent veggies and the bits must be beef – if they’re not, they’re the most convincing pieces of TVP I’ve ever had. Darn good bowl of noodles! 4.0 out of 5.0 stars! UPC bar code 6903252714036 .

This has to be one of the best noodle commercials I’ve ever seen. Ever.

I’m really curious what they’re talking about here – what do Teletubbies, the Master Kong mascot, alpacas and the police have to do with one another?

Spicy beef! This was sent by Bo H. of China! Thanks again! These have all been a lot of fun and quite good! Let’s see how Master Kong’s Spicy Beef goes.

The back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks like they grow big peppers in china.

The block broke but not too badly.

Powdered base.

A decent amount of powder – tasty!

Seasoned oil.

Has a beefish smell.

The veggie packet – more of an herb packet it looks like.

I think the red pieces are chillies. Not sure about the other bits.

Finished (click image to enlarge). I added some onions, broccoli and re bell pepper, a slice of processed cheese, a fried egg and some of that awesome Dua Belibis hot sauce. The noodles are good – they suck up a lot of liquid and are tasty to boot. The broth is nice too – had a spicy and sweet taste to it and the beef flavor is very good. I like this a lot – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 6903252061024 .

Yes! Awesome commercial!

This is awesome – these guys aren’t screwing around with these noodles!

#821: Master Kong/康师傅 Potatoes & Stewed Beef Instant Noodles

This rather unassuming package of ramen came from Bo H. of China. I don’t know if this is exactly what this is called, but I hope it comes close to its name in taste. Potatoes aren’t something commonly found when it comes to instant noodles; there’s sweet potato noodles and potato noodles, but really nothing that involved potato flavor.

The back of the packaging (click image to enlarge).

Was originally a round block it appears.

The powder seasoning.

Lots of powder.

The paste packet.

I had a little taste – it definitely has a peanut component.

A small packet of bits and pieces…

Very small amount but we’ll see…

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added vegetables, some roast beef lunch meat and some Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce. So the noodles are nice and plump. The broth and noodles come together masterfully and this honestly tastes so good I’m going to say I’m truly sad I don’t have any more of it! It literally tastes like a dish centering on beef and potatoes. I love it. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – hands down awesome stuff. The bits and pieces weren’t bad either although very scant. UPC bar code 6903252010947 .

This is the last of the packs that were so kindly sent by Bo H. who works at a University in China. Thanks again! All of these were just amazing – and now… Hmm – not sure what this is! One thing says pork ribs flavor, something else says steak. I guess we’ll see how it comes out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge).

The noodle block.

Powder seasoning.

Light, fine powder – a lot of it.

Paste seasoning.

Smells really good!

Veggies.

Nice looking mixture.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some frozen stir-fry vegetables (yeah need to get to the produce stand soon) and a couple shakes of Krazy Mixed Up Salt. the noodles are good – seem to be a slightly wider gauge than usual and have a nice texture and chew. The broth has a nice spiciness to is and a good meaty flavor. Expected it to be slightly thick and greasy but it wasn’t. A nice pepperiness to is. The vegetables were good too – nice re-gydration. I liked it! 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 6903252710564 .

Master Kong TV commercial.

If you want to see something amazin, check this out. This is a documentary caslled ‘China’s Mega Dam’ – the story of the Three Gorges Project. It’ll blow your mind as to the sheer size of this undertaking!

Here’s one that’s been kind of confusing in the past, and it still is. A guy who said he worked for Master Kong said these aren’t actually Master Kong. When I check the UPC code, it comes up with Kailo Brand Abalone Chicken flavor in a similar sized big cup. Whatever it is, let’s check it out!

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). Says it’s meat-free. Says to add 700ml boiling water and all the packets and cover for 4 minutes.

Here’s the lid detail (click image to enlarge).

An included fork!

The noodle block.

Powder soup base sachet.

Has a sweet beefy scent.

Liquid soup base sachet.

Has a nice meaty beef scent.

The solid ingredients sachet.

A smattering of veggies.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added thin sliced beef and sweet onion that I sauteed. The noodles are thin and slightly weak of character, but not too bad. The broth is sweet and beefy and salty. It’s quite nice, actually! The veggies were meh. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.

Here’s a track from the album mentioned above. Good stuff.

I was contacted by a reader from Sweden that wanted to send me some instant noodles I hadn’t tried before! Thank you very much! Here they are!

The package was wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper put on backwards. Thought it was neat so I scanned it.

Under the wraps.

Wow – Master Kong! I don’t know why we don’t really get any of these here in the United States. These looks good!

Some varieties made in Sweden as well as a few that aren’t. Neat! Thanks again!

Here’s one that was donated by a reader from Sweden! Thanks! It’s funny; you really can’t find any Master Kong noodles here in the United States which is a real bummer. They’re really good – hopefully they’ll be here at some point. What’s tough about Master Kong packs is that they don’t seem to say how much water to add in. For a pack this size, I’ve gone with 500ml before, so I’ll go with 500ml again.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to contain chicken. To prepare, add noodle block and vegetable sachet to 500ml boiling water and cook for 4 minutes. Add in remaining sachet contents and stir. Enjoy!

The noodle block.

Dry powder soup base.

A very fine powder.

Seasoned oil.

Smells oily!

The solid ingredient sachet.

Vegetables and dehydrated chicken bits.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added grilled chicken, sweet onion and bell pepper. The noodles aren’t very chewy – they’re soft like comfort food geared noodles. Not to say that’s bad – they really work well in this context. They suck up the broth, which is decently thick and has a warm, cozy chicken flavor. There is a kind of off taste that’s meandering in the background though. The vegetables and chicken are very nice and have a good taste. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6900873711598.

#1496: Master Kong Mianba Pork Ribs Flavor Instant Noodles

Here’s another one sent by a kind reader in Sweden! Thank you! Master Kong is really popular in China and what surprises me is that there are no places that I’ve seen that you can get their products here in the United States. Luckily, people send them to me from time to time, but it seems to me that I really need to figure out a way to contact them and do a Meet The Manufacturer with them. The Chinese consume billions of packages of instant noodles a year and I’ve never done a Chinese Meet The Manufacturer yet! It’s about time. Well, let’s check out these pork ribs Master Kong instant noodles!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Not sure if it contains meat. As preparation instructions aren’t included, I’m going with 500ml water for 3 minutes (cooking) and adding in vegetable sachet during cooking, then sachet contents at the end and stirring.

The noodle block.

Powder base.

A very light powder.

Paste base sachet.

Smells porky.

Vegetable sachet.

Looks like cabbage and other things.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added pork, bean sprouts, sliced green onion and sweet onion. The noodles had a great thick gauge and were chewy (I can’t read Chinese, but there is a picture of potatoes on the back of the package which to me intimates that it’s a potato noodle). The broth has a good thickness. The flavor is a realistic pork flavor and the paste thickened it up surprisingly well. The vegetables hydrated quite well; cabbage crisp and (possibly) pork crunchies were good as well. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6900873710560.

I really liked this one when I had it a while back. Get it here.

Looks like the making of a Master Kong TV commercial.

Here’s another one sent by a kind reader in Sweden – thanks again! Also want to thank Bobby Y. of Canada for his great help with translating! He’s always been a great help and I truly appreciate it! With all the recent Chinese readers, I thought I’d review a Chinese instant noodle today. These Master Kong varieties are usually quite good. This one’s really big – calls for 700ml water! That’s definitely on the higher end of broth. The noodle block is also quite large with a different gauge than other I’ve tried – looks to be thicker. It also mentions that it’s a ‘cooking’ noodle as opposed to an instant. Cooking noodles require time spent on the stove while instants can either be cooked on the stove or simply put in a bowl and boiling water added, covered and let sit for 3 minutes or so to be done. Let’s have a look at this one from Master Kong – really hoping Master Kong contacts me soon – wouyld love to do a Meet The Manufacturer with them!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Not sure whether this product contains meat or not. To prepare, add noodle block to 700ml boiling water with contents of dry sachets and cook for 2 minutes. Add contents of liquid sachet and cook an additional 4 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry seasoning sachet.

A sweet scent.

The paste sachet.

Has a nice scent of anise and other spices.

The vegetables sachet.

Looks like vegetables and possibly beef or soy protein in here.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added beef, coriander and sweet onion. First off, this is an enormous bowl of noodle soup. The noodles are really quite good – they have a thick gauge and remind me of the yellow noodles I had in Malaysia, although a but less chewy. The broth has a very nice kind of braised beef flavor; detectable notes of anise and a good oiliness. Despite the large about of water used, the broth is not thin in any way and quite flavorful. The vegetables sachet content came out pretty well – cabbage and carrot hydrated well while onion was only so-so. The bits that I was on the fence about being beef or textured vegetable protein appear to be beef and hydrated well. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6900873058624.

Here’s a popular one by Master Kong – has a wonderful braised beef flavor.

Another one sent to me by a nice reader in Sweden – thanks! I thought today would be great for some spicy beef noodles from China. It just sounded good for some reason. I’ve got a sore tooth which is driving me crazy… Dunno why but spicy beef noodles from China just sound nice. Anyways, let’s dig in!

A powdered soup base sachet.

a very light powder.

A seasoned paste sachet.

Has an oily and dark appearance.

The vegetables sachet.

A nice little mixture.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added coriander, mung bean sprouts, and beef and sweet onion sauteed with a little ВКУСНАЯ СОЛЬ ЙОДИРОВАННАЯ – my sister got this stuff for me – it’s called ‘tasty salt for the first course.’  The noodles are broad and flat and a little thick. They have an enjoyable chew to them. The broth is great – a definitely spicy kind of braised beef taste. The heat isn’t overwhelming but just the right amount. The vegetables hydrated well, although they were a little on the small size side. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6900873710362.

Far and few between are the Master Kong varieties I find locally. This is one of them I got a couple months ago – a real surprise. I don’t know why so many of them aren’t available in the United States; I’m guessing possibly that many of their products contain chicken or beef, and import of chicken or beef into the United States from Asia is very hard if not impossible. Luckily, fish products are generally accepted for import quite easily and here we are. Let’s check out this  Master Kong Seafood instant noodle!

Here’s the import/distributor’s sticker (click image to enlarge). What’s interesting is that it’s being called artificial, it does contain shrimp.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). While these products don’t have instructions on how to cook them, I generally do the same thing with all of them. Add noodle block and sachet contents to 500ml boiling water. Cook for 3 minutes and enjoy!

Here’s the noodle block.

Powder soup base sachet.

A very fine powder.

An oil sachet.

Has a strong seafood scent.

A sachet of dried vegetables.

Looks like cabbage, spring onion, seaweed perhaps? Carrot?

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added narutomaki, kamaboko, prawns, sweet onion and mung bean sprouts. The noodles have a familiar gauge and chew – not very thick and not very chewy, but all the same decent. The broth has a nice seafood flavor leaning mostly towards the prawn end of the stick. The broth has a decent richness and slight oiliness which is just right. The dehydrated vegetables were alright. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6920208907991.

The packaging here looks a little different so I’m not sure it’s exactly the same, but I’m sure it’s quite similar. You can get it here!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sliced squid, kamaboko, fish ball, shrimp and crab stick. The noodles came out nice and thick with a light chewiness I liked. The broth was very warm with just a tinge of spiciness and great seafood flavor. Finally, the little bits of fish cake hydrated very nicely and the seaweed that wad easily found was a very nice addition. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6900873028856.

There’s a new Asian Food Center on 130th & Aurora – went there hunting for some of the fruit I got to try in Thailand and found mangosteen – and quite a few instant noodle varieties, this being one of them. A large amount of diverse vegetables.

Finished (click image to enlarge). The noodles are hydrated to a T – just right with a nice gauge and chewiness. High quantity as well. The broth is a thick and hearty mushroom gravy kind of thing which works immensely well with the vegetables, which are full of mushrooms that hydrated very nicely – even the peas came out great. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. The broth has a kind of lemon and sichuan chilli flavor to it – not bad as well. Here’s one sent by Colin from Massachusetts – thanks! I used to work with a lady who couldn’t say Massachusetts. It seemed a little ridiculous to me, but she would stumble over the word repeatedly and it would sound like massive two shits. Anyways, this one seems interesting – why assorted pork bone? Are they from different kinds of pigs? Well, let’s give this one a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Unknown whether this contains meat or not. As preparation instructions aren’t included, I’m going with 500ml water for 3 minutes (cooking) and adding in vegetable sachet during cooking, then sachet contents at the end and stirring.

The noodle block.

A dry soup base sachet.

A very light powder.

A paste sachet.

Has a pork scent.

A vegetables sachet.

Quite a nice quantity and selection.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added boiled pork, coriander and pepper flake. The noodles are nice – soft and comfortable on the chew. The broth has a nice creamy pork quality to it and a nice oiliness. The supplied veggies came out extremely well. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 6900873033218.

#2020: Kang Shi Fu Artficial Roasted Beef Flavour

After quite a few years, its looking more and more like Kang Shi Fu (Master Kong) is definitely getting their products distributed into the United States. This one was sent to me by a reader named Colin (thanks again!) and is definitely different from most of the Mang Shiu Fu stuff I’ve seen. First, there’s a lot of English on the package; something very new to me. Stewed beef sounds good – let’s have a look inside.

The back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add package contents to 500ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy! NOTE: this is the method I’ve used for pretty much all of the Master Kong/Kang Shi Fu variants as the package never have instructions for a cooking method; not even this one in English.

The noodle block.

Dry soup base sachet.

Has a kind of beefy scent.

This is awesome – the ‘secret sauce’ sachet!

A cold day here at The Ramen Rater causes the liquids in sachets to thicken up. This is common – don’t worry.

The vegetables sachet.

Looks like spring onion – maybe a little TVP?

Finished (click to enlarge). Added beef for hot pot, sweet onion, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, coriander and crushed red pepper. The noodles have a thin and floppy character; no backbone really but they’re alright. The broth has a very nice oiliness and a good beef taste with some spices and herbs going on. The vegetables hydrated well. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6166390966518.

Here’s another one sent to my by Colin from the eastern USA – thanks again! So these have always been interesting; they have the little chef guy much like Kang Shi Fu (Master Kong), but often the bar code search will come up with Kailo brand. This morning, I called the number on the back and they gave me another number, and they gave me an email address. I emailed the address I was given and will get the info on what brand this is exactly when they reply – and hopefully they do. Prok ribs – let’s do this!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. The package doesn’t list an exact amount of water to use, so as with other Master Kong varieties I’ve reviewed, 500ml will be used. Add everything into a bowl and add 500ml boiling water. Cover for 4 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block broke a little during shipping.

The powder soup base sachet.

A light powder.

A paste sachet.

Thick and oily.

A vegetables sachet.

A nice variety.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added pork, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion. The noodles were alright – a little on the spongy side but not too bad. The broth had a nice pork flavor with a hint of sourness I noticed. Vegetables hydrated well. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 6909146402355.

Here’s another one sent by reader Colin – thanks again! Salted beef? This is new to me; it just makes me think of beef jerky, but I know that’s probably way off the mark. Let’s see how this one taste.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add package contents to 500ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy! NOTE: this is the method I’ve used for pretty much all of the Master Kong/Kang Shi Fu variants as the package never have instructions for a cooking method; not even this one in English.

The noodle block took some hits during shipping.

The dry soup base.

Very light powder.

The paste sachet.

Very thick.

The vegetables sachet.

A nice little mixture.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, beef for hot pot coriander and star anise. The noodles were very thin and light on the chew. Pretty good though. The broth was great – lots of oiliness and beef flavor going on – really good! The vegetables hydrated but weren’t amazing. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6166390966686.

Here’s another one that was sent to me by a reader named Colin from the east coast – thanks again! Still amazes me how many varieties of instant noodles are available in the United States I’ve not sampled yet. Let’s dig in to some seafoodiness today!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains fish. To prepare, add package contents to 500ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy! NOTE: this is the method I’ve used for pretty much all of the Master Kong/Kang Shi Fu variants as the package never have instructions for a cooking method.

The noodle block.

The dry soup base.

A little light powder.

A liquid sachet.

Thick and oily.

A fancy little garnish sachet.

Fishcake and other goodies.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion, fried garlic, chilli flake, Dodo fish ball, crab claw fish cake, shrimp and carved squid. The noodles were a little on the thin size but of decent character and great quantity. The broth was kind of a buttery seafood kind of thing; not bad but not exceedingly impressing on the taste scale. The butteryness worked well with the oiliness which was adequate. The included garnish was of good quantity – the narutomaki hydrated well enough and the seaweed was good, although not as prevalent as I would’ve liked. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6900873033072.

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Chinese Instant Noodles Of All Time 2017 Edition

恭喜发财 and Happy Lunar New Year to all! I had a look at my lists I hadn’t updated in a while and saw it was in January of 2014 last I did a top ten Chinese list. Why so long? Well, I like to have done quite a few reviews in a year when it comes to country lists for that specific country. If I’d done only two and there weren’t any big changes, I’ll kind of let it go until the next year. This one seemed ripe and ready for a new version. Of the almost 150 reviews I’ve done of Chinese instant noodles, these are my favorites. I should mention that if you are an instant noodle in mainland China and interested in having me review your products, please contact me to set up a review series. With that, let’s have a look at The Ramen Rater’s top Ten Chinese Instant Noodles Of All Time 2017 Edition.

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Chinese Instant Noodles Of All Time 2017 Edition

The noodles, made from purple potatoes have a nice texture to them – a little sturdier than your garden variety instant and they were very nice to chew. The broth is a thick beef and tomato affair, with a very luxuriant and rich texture to it – almost creamy in a way. The inclusion of large pieces of tomato and real beef brisket in there was admirable and very enjoyable. Premium bowl of noodles. Original review here
